Ghana defender Alexander Djiku banned over betting

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku has been banned by the French Football authorities following an investigation into sports betting among players in French Football.

Djiku, who plays for Strasbourg, is banned for a match which means he will miss the club’s Ligue 1 clash against Paris Saint Germain on December 28 but may return to play against Troyes on January 2

The 28-year-old is said to be among seventy-six(76) players and officials who flouted the code of conduct regarding players’ involvement in sports betting, and have been sanctioned.

The culprits were found to have broken the rules during the 2020-21 season and will duly serve their penalties instantly.

“These offences were committed even though, together, the LFP and the UNFP (the players’ union) have carried out awareness or information campaigns with the clubs on a daily basis,” wrote the LFP in its press release.

“The Commission recalls that the actors of the competitions organized by the FFF or the LFP (in particular the players, coaches, managers of professional football clubs) have a general ban on betting, online or in physical networks, on all football competitions, whether domestic or foreign.” the official statement read.

The vice-captain of Strasbourg has made 14 appearances for his club this season.

Djiku made two appearances for Ghana in the just-ended 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
